RACAL Cougar Amphibious Divers Setup

RACAL Cougar Amphibious Divers Setup

The RACAL Cougar was marketed as a waterproof system, but as you may be aware it always suffered from issues with water ingress around the controls.

As the capabilities of how waterproof it really was, were put to the test whilst in service, a solution was created to make it truely waterproof.

The RACAL Cougar system was designed to fulfil a multitude of roles in the defence and security sector. Some roles would require the radio to be submerged either for a short term or for an extended period. For example amphibious assault or the SAR (Search And Rescue) diver.

To fulfil the requirement this configuration was created.

In essence the normal radio is used, but placed inside a waterproof housing that allows external control and connection of ancillaries.

The knobs on the radio are changed to ones that allow the controls on the housing to press against them and adjust them, as the external control is adjusted.

The operator could then wear the radio without it coming in to contact with water.

To operate the radio, a waterproof transmit and receive control is provided, as the operator maybe wearing gloves, or have limited motor function, this is oversized to ease location and operation.

A range of headset options were available, based on the role the radio would fulfil.

This version has a waterproof combat headset and would typically be seen in the amphibious assault capability, with the Marines or Special Forces.

Other options included connection to a divers existing headgear.

The equipment is quite rare on the market in a complete condition so if you are collecting the RACAL Cougar system components I would purchase one if it becomes available.
